The half that goes inside your shoe

The bunion corrector is for resting and sleeping. This is the piece you wear the rest of the day. The loop goes over your big toe, the soft pad sits over the bump, and the wing keeps a little space between the big toe and the one next to it.

What it does is simple: it stops the bump rubbing against the inside of your shoe, and it takes the pressure off the skin over the joint. If your bunion is sore by lunchtime because of the shoe rather than the walking, this is the part that helps.

Wearing it

• Stretch the loop over your big toe and let the pad settle over the bump.
• Wear it under a sock, inside a normal shoe. It is thin enough that most shoes still fit.
• Start with 2 to 3 hours the first day and build up from there.
• Rinse with soap and water at the end of the day and let it air dry.

Being honest about it

This does not straighten the bone and it will not make the bump smaller. Nothing you wear will. What it does is stop the rubbing and hold a bit of space between the toes while it is on. Use it during the day, use the corrector when you are resting, and judge both within a week.
